Spencer Bridge Engineering has been recognised at the 2025 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards after receiving the Heritage & Infrastructure Award for its work on the Connel Bridge New Walkways project.
Spencer Bridge Engineering designed, constructed and installed a temporary 240m walkway on the Grade B listed Connel Bridge, which spans Loch Etive in Scotland.
Appointed by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland, SBE were required to develop a new walkway to allow pedestrian access throughout planned works to replace the entire bridge deck over the coming years.
Built in 1903, Connel Bridge was the second largest cantilever bridge in Europe at the time and was originally built as a railway bridge. Due to the bridge’s historic significance and its Grade B listed status, the walkway design required significant innovation to protect the structure’s heritage.
By using innovative design techniques such as laser scanning and 3D modelling, the SBE team were able to analyse the bridge before developing a walkway that was practical and in keeping with the existing bridge.
Comprising of more than 1,000 individually hot-dip galvanised components, the walkway was designed for long-term durability and corrosion resistance. The finish also helped the new structure sit alongside the bridge’s existing appearance, preserving its visual aesthetic.
