Recently, the Lighthouse Charity’s #MakeItVisible team visited Spencer Bridge Engineering’s Menai Suspension Bridge site in North Wales to give an insightful talk on emotional, physical and financial wellbeing.
In 2025, Spencer Group chose the Lighthouse Charity to be its official Charity of the Year. The company’s Charity Champions led on the fundraising efforts, organising a range of events and activities which resulted in a total of £18,646 being raised, a record-breaking amount for Spencer Group since they began the Charity of the Year initiative.
After the year of fundraising for the Lighthouse Charity came to a close, the Spencer Group extended its support through a partnership, which includes access to staff training programmes and nationwide #MakeItVisible site visits, ensuring employees can continue to benefit from the charity’s expertise.
The charity’s visit to the Menai Suspension Bridge was the third #MakeItVisible site visit for Spencer Group, having previously visited the company’s project sites in both Carrington and Clacton.
The visit facilitated open and honest conversations around emotional, physical and financial wellbeing and reinforced the importance of creating a supportive environment on site and throughout the construction industry.
The #MakeItVisible team delivered an important session focused on building confidence to speak up and recognising how to support colleagues who may be struggling or unsure where to turn for help.
The session was very well received and encouraged open, honest discussion among the project team. It emphasised the value of having the support of the Lighthouse Charity at Spencer Group, particularly as the organisation continues to change the perception of mental health across the construction industry.
Opening up about mental health struggles can be difficult, something which is especially prevalent in the construction industry, where stigma continues to prevent people from seeking help. This is why having access to organisations like the Lighthouse Charity, who deliver vital support to construction workers across the country, is so important.
Spencer Group continues to puts its people at the heart of what they do. By advocating for its employees by providing them with opportunities like these site visits, the company are actively ensuring that employee wellbeing remains a priority.
Tom Inglis, Project Manager at Spencer Group, said:
“We work in an industry where, unfortunately, mental health is a large concern but isn’t spoken about enough. It’s great that charities like Lighthouse, who provide vital wellbeing support to construction workers, are able to visit our sites to raise awareness and provide support for site-based staff who may be struggling in silence.”
Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, said:
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Spencer Group for their continued commitment to spreading the message of support. Their proactive stance in promoting our charitable services continues to open conversations around positive wellbeing and helps to create a supportive working environment for everyone in our industry”.
“Our #MakeItVisible initiative aims to reach some of the industry’s most vulnerable workers. Key to this initiative is addressing the barriers within the sector through an informal approach, letting people know that they are not alone in dealing with work and life challenges, and sharing experiences in a relaxed manner to reduce the stigma.”
