Spencer Bridge Engineering, in collaboration with UK Highways A55 Ltd and the Welsh Government, completed Phase 1 of refurbishment works on the historic Menai Suspension Bridge in November 2024, ahead of the crossing’s bicentenary. First opened in 1826, the Grade I listed structure is the second oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying vehicle traffic. The project team undertook a series of specialist works to preserve the bridges structural integrity while maintaining its operational functionality.
After completing earlier projects, including the replacement of footpath panels and the installation of emergency failsafe’s on the 417m-long bridge, Spencer Bridge Engineering began the hanger replacement project in Autumn 2023.
The scope of works involved the replacement of 168 of the bridge’s 208 wire rope hangers, a critical intervention required to restore full structural integrity and eliminate the safety risks that led to the bridge’s closure in October 2022.
The remaining 40 hangers also required painting as part of the project. The replacement hangers, which ranged from less than 1m to over 14m were fabricated to a stringent specification with an incredibly narrow length tolerance, by specialist Swiss steel manufacturer, Fatzer AG.
To preserve the bridge’s heritage and historic character, the project team worked closely with suppliers through a rigorous period of development and testing to design the specially fabricated hangers and sockets.
The successful completion of the hanger replacement on schedule represents a significant engineering achievement, particularly given the complexity of the programme and the accelerated delivery timeframe.
Despite the project posing numerous significant challenges, including working in a harsh environment with strong winds and persistent wet weather, the project was delivered on time, enabling the bridge to reopen over the winter period at the client’s request.
