The York Millennium Bridge is a footbridge that runs over the River Ouse in the heart of York. The bridge was intended to shorten the walking and cycling route for students and residents from the city’s South Bank area to the University of York and the city centre, in a part of the city that had previously lacked a river crossing.

PROJECT SCOPE

The bridge was constructed using a complex box beam structure supported on a stainless-steel raked bowstring. Spencer Bridge Engineering adopted new fabrication techniques and an innovative construction methodology to launch the bridge across the river following assembly on one side of the bank. This method was imperative to reducing disruption in York City Centre.

The associated River Walks were also enhanced with hard and soft landscaping involving the construction of bank-side viewing platforms, paving, street furniture, plaques, signposts, fencing, gates, and a feature lighting scheme. All works were carried out within particularly rigorous environmental constraints, requiring careful planning and close coordination throughout delivery.

Have a bridge project you want to discuss?

We work closely with clients from the earliest stages to develop practical, deliverable engineering solutions for complex bridge structures. By combining early contractor involvement, specialist technical expertise, and real-world delivery experience, we help shape projects that are safer, more efficient, and built for long-term performance. Get in touch to discuss your project and explore how early collaboration can reduce risk, improve constructability, and support successful outcomes.

PROJECT OUTCOME

The project was successfully completed without any unplanned disruption to the local community. The bridge has since become a landmark structure that has provided local residents and students with a more efficient pedestrian and cycle route across the River Ouse for over twenty years.

Alongside providing better connectivity, Spencer Bridge Engineering also planted trees and carried out wild flower seeding to help improve the local environment.

As a Millennium project, the bridge was intended to become an iconic landmark and focal point for the area, delivering long-term community benefits while meeting strict cost and programme requirements associated with undertaking construction works over an active waterway.
